​Life happens. We get that. Death, sickness, divorce, trauma, loss. We’re not here to sugar-coat anything about life, and our reactions to it. But we do say one very important thing - the workplace should not be the source of stress or anxiety. Why should it be? If a workplace is a significant source of stress, in anyone’s life, it is a system failure, a design flaw.

It ought not to happen. 

Workplace stress just seems to be accepted as a given, maybe even celebrated in an outdated, macho, ‘who can tough it out” kind of way. The Protestant work ethic on steroids. “Just human nature” we say, as we laughingly post memes about our desperation for coffee, or our need for that nightly glass of wine. 

We see it differently.  If you were a structural engineer, and your bridge fell down, would you be ok with it? Shrug your shoulders and just say “oh well, that’s the nature of bridges, grab me another cup of coffee…” ?

Of course not. If you weren’t fired or sued, you’d be knee deep in figuring out what went wrong and how to ensure it never happens again.    

Our challenge to you is to see workplace stress the same way. In fact, to see it in a whole different light. 

To see it as something that is not ‘ok’ or inevitable, but rather as a correctable flaw in the system. To see the workplace as not a warzone that our employees should learn how to cope and survive in, but rather as a project they get to build, or a play they can put on - an environment and system you set up where they can thrive and accomplish great things together. 

LIke a well-engineered bridge, it should be a place that can withstand whatever Mother Nature throws at it, and not cause anyone any harm.
